“My experience at Inner-City Arts at Children’s Institute was amazing. I had so much fun working with my friends and learning about animation. We worked in groups and made silhouette animations too. The characters we made were silly and the plot of the story was funny. I got to wear a wig and dance around. All in all, it was a great experience and I’m so grateful that our class got so lucky to get a chance to come to Inner-City Arts.”
At the start of last fall, we launched a partnership with Children’s Institute Inc. (CII), one of LA’s largest child welfare agencies, with a vision of bringing the spirit of Inner-City Arts into spaces outside our campus and provide quality arts education to more students — especially those living in high-need areas neighboring the CII Otis Booth campus just west of Downtown.
Since the start of the partnership, we have served nearly 900 students in our visual and media arts satellite studios at the CII location. Taught by our own teaching artists, students explore their emerging talents and develop their creative voice through comic book illustration, silhouette animation, color theory, watercolor and so much more.
This fall in Media Arts, students worked in teams to write, edit, and film “promotional pieces” exploring different stop motion animation techniques and experimental typography. Young artists from Ms. Matiga’s fifth grade class from Commonwealth Elementary promoted creativity:
